Credit score · Chapter 03 of 08
Improvement is boring and slow: repay on time, keep balances low, keep accounts old, apply rarely, and check the report so nothing false sits there. Nothing on this page requires paying anyone.

It depends on the cause. A corrected error can move within a dispute cycle (RBI gives the bureau 30 days to act), while a genuine missed payment or a high balance needs several clean months of lender reporting. There is no official timeline for score movement, and any promised date is a sales pitch.
Closing a loan reduces outstanding debt, which can help, but prepaying does not remove a past missed payment, and closing your only long-standing account trims account age. The reliable lever remains repayment behaviour over time.
A card used lightly and repaid in full adds repayment history, which is what bureaus score. The risk is utilisation and missed dues. If you carry a balance, the interest cost outweighs any score benefit.
Settling reduces the outstanding but the record of how it was settled stays visible to lenders. Settling is better than defaulting, and it is not the same as a clean repayment history.
