Demat Account
Electronic vault that holds your shares and securities.
A demat (dematerialised) account holds your shares, bonds, ETFs and mutual-fund units in electronic form with a depository (CDSL or NSDL) through your broker. You cannot buy delivery shares in India without one. It carries an annual maintenance charge (AMC) set by your broker.
Example
You buy 10 shares of Infosys via Zerodha — they land in your CDSL demat, not as paper certificates.
