Broker guide

Best broker for F&O trading in India

Options buyers need flat ₹20/order brokerage and serious charting; sellers need margin clarity. Ranked for both.

Who is this guide for?

This guide is for traders who buy or sell options contracts and care about per-order brokerage, option-chain tooling, order types and API access.

Options pricing is flat ₹20/order at discount brokers, but STT (0.15% of premium on sell, post-2026), exchange charges on premium turnover, and GST stack fast for frequent traders. Platform quality — option chains, strategy builders, execution — separates the field.

Buyers and sellers face opposite maths. A buyer paying ₹50 premium per share on a 100-quantity lot risks ₹5,000 and pays roughly ₹20 brokerage plus ~₹8 STT plus exchange and GST — about 1% friction before the trade moves. A seller collects the same premium but blocks SPAN-level margin and faces assignment risk. This is why tooling matters more than the ₹20: a missing Greeks view or a slow square-off costs multiples of any brokerage difference.

Note the Finance Act 2026 STT hike on F&O: factor the new rates into every strategy's break-even.

The true cost of f&o trading — beyond brokerage

  • Brokerage per order — flat ₹20 or less at every broker in this table
  • STT at 0.15% of premium on sell (post-2026) — the dominant statutory cost for sellers closing in profit
  • Exchange transaction charges on premium turnover plus SEBI fees — identical everywhere
  • GST at 18% on brokerage plus exchange charges, stamp duty on the buy side
  • Blocked margin for sellers (SPAN + exposure) — idle capital, same opportunity-cost logic as futures
  • Assignment and exercise costs — exercised ITM options settle with delivery-STT implications; confirm the broker's policy

Our take

Options traders should shortlist on tooling, not price: every broker here charges flat ₹20 or less, so the option chain, Greeks, strategy builder and multi-leg execution speed decide. Per-lot brokers (₹39–100/lot) are excluded because frequent traders overpay fast on those plans — but occasional single-lot buyers should verify them separately. Paper-trade the platform's square-off flow before expiry week; that is where weak platforms hurt most.

How we compare brokers

Every broker is scored by the same transparent scorer as the find-my-broker quiz — editorial rating plus persona fit over live fee data. The comparison for this guide considers:

  • Options brokerage (effective ₹ at a ₹50k order size)
  • Platform score (option chain, charts, execution)
  • API availability
  • Editorial rating

Labels like “lowest” are computed from the fee figures in the table above — never assigned by hand. Verify pricing on the official site before opening an account.
