Who is this guide for?

This guide is for traders who buy and sell futures contracts — index or stock — and care about per-order brokerage, margin requirements and execution reliability.

Futures brokerage is flat ₹10–20 per order at most discount brokers, so the field separates on platform quality, margin transparency and execution reliability rather than headline price.

The real cost of a futures trade is the margin blocked, not the brokerage. A Nifty futures lot at ~₹1.5L notional needs roughly ₹1.1–1.3L in SPAN plus exposure margin sitting idle — earning nothing while the position is open. That opportunity cost, plus STT at 0.05% on sale and exchange charges on full notional turnover, means a futures position must move much further than an equivalent options buy just to break even. Brokers quoting per-lot pricing (₹39–100/lot) look cheap until you annualise them across rollovers.

Note the Finance Act 2026 STT change for futures (0.05% on sale): factor it into every strategy's break-even with the brokerage calculator.

The true cost of futures trading — beyond brokerage

  • Brokerage per order — flat ₹20 or less at every broker in this table
  • Blocked margin (SPAN + exposure) — the dominant cost: idle capital earning nothing while the position is open
  • STT at 0.05% on sale (post-2026) applied on full notional — much larger than it looks on leveraged turnover
  • Exchange transaction charges on notional turnover plus SEBI fees — identical everywhere
  • GST at 18% on brokerage plus exchange charges, stamp duty on the buy side
  • Margin-pledge costs and delay — some brokers charge per pledge/unpledge or take a day to release collateral
  • Rollover costs — every expiry roll pays the full charge stack again, monthly

Our take

Futures traders should pick on margin transparency and platform reliability first — brokerage is a near-tie across this table. Brokers on per-lot or percentage pricing are excluded because their cost can't be compared per-order; if you trade single lots infrequently, verify their plans separately. Confirm three things before funding: the broker's margin calculator matches exchange SPAN, pledge/unpledge costs and timelines, and what happens (and what it costs) if a position breaches margin intraday.

How we compare brokers

Every broker is scored by the same transparent scorer as the find-my-broker quiz — editorial rating plus persona fit over live fee data. The comparison for this guide considers:

  • Futures brokerage (effective ₹ at a ₹50k order size)
  • Platform score (execution, charting, reliability)
  • API availability
  • Editorial rating

Labels like “lowest” are computed from the fee figures in the table above — never assigned by hand. Verify pricing on the official site before opening an account.
