Who is this guide for?

This guide is for investors who primarily invest through mutual funds and SIPs and care about direct plans, automation and goal tracking.

Mutual-fund investors should never pay commission: direct plans plus a clean SIP interface beat star ratings. This ranking rewards in-app MF support, onboarding ease and one-app simplicity.

The direct-vs-regular gap is the largest free lunch in Indian retail investing. On a ₹10,000 monthly SIP over 20 years at 12%, a 1% commission drag costs roughly ₹20L in foregone compounding — more than two full years of contributions. Every broker in this table supports direct plans in-app; brokers without MF support are excluded outright, since paying commission to stay with them is never worth it.

For dedicated MF platforms with deeper analytics, also compare the mutual-fund apps directory.

The true cost of mutual-fund investors — beyond brokerage

  • Fund expense ratio — the only large cost: direct plans save ~1% yearly over regular plans, verified per scheme, not per broker
  • Broker platform fees — most brokers charge nothing for MF transactions; confirm no hidden convenience fees
  • Exit loads — scheme-level (typically 1% under a year for equity), identical wherever you buy
  • STT and capital-gains tax — scheme-level, identical everywhere; equity funds held over a year get LTCG treatment
  • AMC on your demat — irrelevant if you hold only fund units, but charged if the account exists; free-AMC brokers win

Our take

If your money lives in SIPs, this table is the whole shortlist: every broker here supports direct mutual funds in-app, so the choice is interface and habit design, not cost. Prefer step-up SIPs and multi-day flexibility if your income is variable; prefer goal tracking if you invest toward targets. Excluded brokers lack MF support entirely — there is no reason to hold funds through them when direct plans are free elsewhere.

How we compare brokers

Every broker is scored by the same transparent scorer as the find-my-broker quiz — editorial rating plus persona fit over live fee data. The comparison for this guide considers:

  • In-app mutual-fund support (entity flag)
  • Onboarding ease and one-app simplicity
  • Guided-investor fit: research and support scores
  • Account costs (opening + AMC)
  • Editorial rating

Labels like “lowest” are computed from the fee figures in the table above — never assigned by hand. Verify pricing on the official site before opening an account.

FAQs

Direct vs regular plans — does it matter?

Enormously: ~1% yearly commission compounds to lakhs over decades. Always choose direct. Our guide explains the maths.

Can I buy mutual funds through a stock broker?

Yes — most brokers offer direct-plan MFs in-app. Dedicated MF platforms may offer better goal-tracking and analytics.

What should mutual-fund investors compare?

Direct-plan availability, SIP automation features, any platform or transaction fees, goal-tracking tools, and whether you also want stocks and IPOs in the same app.
